In a major stride towards transforming education through technology, Ibadan Digital Academy (IDA), in partnership with West Midlands Open University (WMOU), hosted the Digital Educators’ Empowerment Program (DEEP) on June 25, 2025.
The hands-on workshop, which drew participation from educators across the region, was designed to equip teachers with practical skills for integrating Generative AI (GenAI) into their instructional practices.
The event was anchored by Funmi Crown of Lead Radio, 106.5 FM, and opened with remarks from Mr. ‘Sogo Faloye, Chief Operating Officer of IDA. Mr. Faloye introduced IDA’s comprehensive services, including digital literacy training, national certifications, and tech consulting, while unveiling two new initiatives: a Moodle-based Learning Management System (LMS) and an AI Summer Boot Camp for secondary school students.
A keynote address was delivered by Dr. Bambi, representing the Vice Chancellor of WMOU. He highlighted WMOU’s mission of democratizing education through flexible, tech-enabled learning and praised the IDA-WMOU partnership as a model for reshaping education in the AI era.
AI-Powered Teaching: From Theory to Practice
The workshop featured expert-led sessions that combined conceptual understanding with tool-based training. Engr. Tayo Ojo, IDA’s AI Consultant, introduced participants to core AI concepts and effective prompt engineering techniques. His sessions emphasized clarity and context in AI interactions, illustrating how tools like ChatGPT and MagicSchool.ai can enhance lesson planning, assessments, and personalized learning.
Mr. Adebowale Ishola, an IDA facilitator, demonstrated the use of Canva and its AI-powered features for designing engaging educational materials. Tools like Teachable Machine were also showcased for their potential in demonstrating basic machine learning concepts to students.
Engagement and Forward Thinking
The interactive Q&A segment saw educators raise important questions on the risks of over-reliance on AI and concerns around academic integrity. The consensus emphasized guided use, critical evaluation, and the need for updated assessment models that prioritize creativity and problem-solving. Training materials were made available to attendees for continued learning.
Strategic Recommendations and Institutional Vision
Key takeaways from the workshop included the importance of:
- Mastering prompt engineering for effective AI use.
- Leveraging AI as a support tool, not a replacement for teacher input.
- Redesigning assessments to reflect 21st-century learning goals.
- Establishing formal AI usage policies within schools.
- Fostering continuous professional development among educators.
Driving the Future of Education
The DEEP workshop underscored IDA and WMOU’s commitment to preparing educators for a digital-first future. By combining strategic insight with practical exposure, the initiative empowered participants to rethink their teaching methods and embrace AI as a transformative ally in the classroom.
