DEEP 2.0 Equips Educators with Practical AI Skills for Modern Teaching
The future of education is changing rapidly, and educators must be prepared to lead that transformation.
To support this mission, Ibadan Digital Academy (IDA), in partnership with DigitalBridge Publishing Studio (DBPS), successfully hosted the second edition of the Digital Educator Empowerment Program (DEEP 2.0). Themed “Generative AI for Teachers: Practical Tools for Modern Teaching,” the event brought together educators, school leaders, policymakers, and technology professionals to explore how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be leveraged responsibly to improve educational outcomes.
Held at the Ibadan Digital Academy Training & Innovation Hub, DEEP 2.0 provided participants with valuable insights and practical demonstrations of AI-powered tools that are transforming classroom experiences.

Why DEEP 2.0 Matters
As learners increasingly interact with digital tools, educators face an important challenge: How do we prepare students for a future where AI will be integrated into learning, work, and everyday life?
This question formed the foundation of DEEP 2.0. The program was designed to move beyond theoretical conversations about AI, providing educators with real-world applications and hands-on experience using Generative AI tools to enhance teaching effectiveness and improve student learning experiences.
Setting the Stage: Preparing Learners for 2040
In his Host Address, Engr. Peter Ojo, Chief Executive Officer of Ibadan Digital Academy, challenged participants to think beyond today’s classroom realities.
“What skills will today’s pupils need to succeed in the year 2040? More importantly, are we preparing them for that future today?”

He emphasized that while AI is transforming how people work and learn, the future of education will ultimately be determined by educators who are willing to learn, adapt, and innovate.
Government Endorsement for AI-Powered Education
A major highlight of the event was the participation of the Oyo State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. The Honourable Commissioner, Hon. Olusegun Olayiwola, was represented by the Director of Applied Science and Technology, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Fawole.
In her remarks, Mrs. Fawole emphasized that AI should be viewed as a tool that empowers educators rather than replaces them. She highlighted several ways AI is already contributing to educational advancement, including saving valuable time for educators, supporting personalized learning, and improving assessment processes.
“Technology can provide information, but teachers provide wisdom. Technology can automate tasks, but teachers transform lives.” – Mrs. Oluwatoyin Fawole

Expert Insights on the Future of Education
Dr. Ayo Akano: The Evolution of Teaching Methods
Renowned educator and author, Dr. Ayo Akano, traced the evolution of teaching from traditional chalkboard instruction to digitally connected learning environments. He reminded participants that while educational tools evolve, one principle remains unchanged: “The teacher is irreplaceable.”
Professor Olumide Longe: Embracing Opportunities
Joining virtually from the United States, Professor Olumide Longe, Vice-Chancellor of West Midlands Open University, challenged educators to focus on the opportunities AI presents rather than approaching it with fear. He highlighted the need to rethink traditional assessment models to focus more on problem-solving, critical thinking, and authentic learning.
Practical AI Tools for Teachers
The hands-on demonstration session was a crowd favorite, introducing participants to platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Canva AI. Facilitators guided educators through:
- Lesson Planning: Generating lesson plans and learning objectives within minutes.
- Assessment Design: Creating quizzes, assignments, and rubrics efficiently.
- Content Creation: Designing presentations, worksheets, and visual resources.
- Administrative Efficiency: Automating repetitive tasks to allow more time for student engagement

Key Takeaways from DEEP 2.0
- AI is not replacing teachers; it is empowering them.
- Educators must embrace continuous learning and adaptation.
- Critical thinking remains one of the most important skills in the AI era.
- Schools need clear policies for responsible and ethical AI use.
- Technology should support learning outcomes, not replace human connection.
Strengthening Education Through Strategic Partnership
A defining feature of DEEP 2.0 was the collaboration between the organizers. While Ibadan Digital Academy focuses on digital skills training and educational technology solutions, DigitalBridge Publishing Studio specializes in curriculum-aligned educational resources, showcasing current publications like Basic Digital Literacy for Primary 4 and Digital Technologies for JSS 1.
By combining expertise in teacher development and educational publishing, this partnership is creating new opportunities for Nigerian schools to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
Looking Ahead
The future of education will not be shaped by Artificial Intelligence alone. It will be shaped by educators who understand how to combine human intelligence, creativity, empathy, and technology to create meaningful learning experiences.
